General Course Description

In this intermediate level course you will become familiar with the purpose and process of clinical supervision. You will review the currently accepted models for conducting supervision, the requirements posed by various licensing bodies, the skills and qualities of supervisor and supervisee, which promote effective supervision, and the ethics associated with supervisory relationships. Whether your interest is simply the expansion of knowledge of all things clinical or whether you are considering becoming a supervisor, this course will expand your understanding of supervision and its impacts.

The course is composed of nine documents. The first and second articles provide a thorough review of the models of supervision and the requirements for supervision of trainees in Psychology, Social Work, and Marriage and Family Therapy (with emphasis on California laws and regulations). The third article reviews all aspects of ethics and laws which are relevant to the supervisory experience. The next section, accompanied by two audiotaped interviews, a video and an article, postulates the qualities and skills associated with effective supervisors and trainees. The eighth document discusses multicultural competencies required for cross-cultural supervision. The final section provides references, resources and updates in the field of Clinical Supervision.
